Two Real, Dated Deals - and a Lot of Coal

Updated July 2026

BIS Act, 2016
Quick Answer

India-Australia trade runs around $24.1 billion a year (FY2024-25, Commerce Ministry), but it's overwhelmingly coal, gold and iron ore - none of it BIS-relevant. The genuinely BIS-relevant slice is thin and we're not going to invent a precise dollar figure for it. What we do have: two real, dated, sourced deals - mining equipment from Maryborough, Queensland, and truck trays from a Brisbane-headquartered manufacturer - both mapping to FMCS. Standphill India works from verified specifics, not a generic industry list. Call +91-9667674225.

India's Commerce Ministry puts total bilateral trade at $24.1 billion for FY2024-25. IBEF's more recent partial-year figure (April-November 2025) shows $13.93 billion for that eight-month window. Australia's own DFAT reports a different number again - A$50.1 billion in combined goods and services for 2023-24 - but that's a different currency, a different fiscal year, and includes services, so we're not blending it with the goods-only figures above.

Here's the honest problem with building this page the way we built our other country pages: we could not find a single official source that isolates "BIS-eligible manufactured goods" as its own line item in Australia's exports to India. What we can say with confidence is that coal, gold, iron ore, copper ore and raw cotton dominate the headline numbers, and none of them are BIS categories. Rather than invent a precision we don't have, we went looking for real, dated, named examples instead - and found two.

Standphill India would rather show you two verified case files than a generic "Electronics, Solar, Automotive, Construction Materials" list that doesn't match what Australia actually exports - that kind of list is easy to write and hard to trust.

Verified Case Files - Not a Generic Industry List

VERIFIED CASE FILE 2024

CR Powered by Epiroc - Maryborough, Queensland

Manufactures ground-engaging tools (cast lips and similar wear parts) for excavator and wheel-loader buckets used in mining. Entered the Indian market in 2024, landed its first contract within six months, and ran a trial deployment at an iron-ore site in Odisha, building 30+ new Indian business relationships along the way. This is exactly the kind of industrial-equipment component that maps to FMCS.

VERIFIED, WITH A CAVEAT March 2025

Austin Engineering - Brisbane HQ (ASX: ANG)

Delivered 17 customised "ULTIMA" mining truck trays, a $2.7 million order, to an unnamed tier-one Indian iron-ore producer.

Austin Engineering is headquartered and engineered in Brisbane - but this specific order was manufactured at the company's Batam, Indonesia facility, not in Australia. We're flagging that honestly rather than presenting it as a clean "Australian factory" story, because country of manufacture, not corporate HQ, is what actually matters for BIS.

We also checked three names that show up in the "Australia exports to India" conversation and found the story doesn't hold up: BlueScope Steel's India connection is an onshore joint venture inside India (the opposite direction, and reportedly being wound down), Tindo Solar has no verified India export activity despite solar panels appearing on generic industry lists, and Cochlear's Sydney manufacturing is real but falls under CDSCO as a medical device, not BIS.

What Actually Needs BIS - And What Doesn't

CategoryNeeds BIS?
Coal & mineral fuelsNo - raw commodity/fuel
Gold & precious metalsNo - bullion, customs/hallmarking territory
Iron ore & copper oreNo - raw mineral, pre-processing
Raw cottonNo - raw agricultural fibre
Mining & industrial equipment componentsYes - FMCS, our two verified case files
Fertilisers & inorganic chemicalsPartly - formulation-dependent QCOs
Fabricated aluminium articlesPartly - raw ingot no, finished components possibly

If a page claims Australia exports meaningful volumes of electronics, IT hardware or solar panels to India, ask for the source. We looked and couldn't find trade data to support it.

Scheme Comparison - FMCS, CRS or Scheme-X

SchemeTypical UseFactory InspectionTimelineCost
FMCSMining/industrial equipment componentsYes4-6 monthsINR 4-8 lakh+
CRSElectrical & electronic equipmentNo3-6 weeks~₹53,000 + testing
Scheme-XSelect lower-risk categoriesNoFastest, variesLower than FMCS

Ignore any "6-10 weeks" figure applied to everything. Mining-equipment components generally go through FMCS, which runs 4 to 6 months with a mandatory factory inspection - not 6 to 10 weeks.

The Authorized Indian Representative Requirement

FMCS applications need a mandatory India-based Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) - someone resident in India, degree-holding, and able to represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time. Standphill India serves as AIR for our Australian clients so you're not hunting for one separately.

The AIR's name goes on your licence documents and stays involved through inspections, renewals, and every BIS query in between.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Coal and iron ore are raw commodities, not manufactured products, so BIS product certification doesn't apply. These dominate the headline export figures but make up almost none of the genuinely BIS-relevant trade.
No. Gold and precious metals are bullion trade, governed by customs and hallmarking rules, not BIS product certification.
Ground-engaging tools for mining equipment from CR Powered by Epiroc, manufactured in Maryborough, Queensland, which entered the Indian market in 2024 with a trial deployment at an iron-ore site in Odisha - a verified, dated case rather than a generic industry claim.
CRS typically takes 3 to 6 weeks once testing is complete. FMCS, with a mandatory factory inspection, realistically takes 4 to 6 months - not the 6-10 weeks sometimes quoted as a blanket figure.
Yes, for FMCS applications. The AIR is a mandatory India-based, degree-holding point of contact who can represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time.
Yes. A company can be headquartered in Australia while manufacturing a specific product elsewhere, which matters both for BIS country-of-origin rules and for giving clients an honest answer. We check the factory location for your specific product, not just the corporate address.
