BIS Certification Consultant in Germany
The Five Companies Behind a $30 Billion Trade Corridor
India-Germany trade runs around $30 billion a year. The largest single category on Germany's side is machinery - mechanical appliances (~$3.65B) - and that's also the biggest genuinely BIS-relevant slice, mostly via FMCS. Electrical equipment (~$1.6B) mostly goes through CRS (3-6 weeks); machinery and other FMCS categories take 4-6 months with a factory inspection. One category people assume needs BIS but doesn't: aircraft - spacecraft parts (~$1.6B) - that's DGCA territory, not ours. Standphill India sorts the real scope out. Call +91-9667674225.
India and Germany's trade relationship "surpassed $30 billion," Prime Minister Modi said at the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Businesses in October 2024. That's the round, official, headline number. The figure that actually matters for a certification consultant is more granular - IBEF's category-by-category breakdown for April-November 2025 (an eight-month partial-year window, not a full year) puts total two-way trade at $20.25 billion, split between India's $7.47 billion in exports to Germany and Germany's $12.78 billion in imports into India. It's that import side - what Germany actually ships here - that BIS regulates, and where this page focuses.
Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Volkswagen, BMW, BASF, Siemens - you already know these names, and that's rather the point. Germany's exports to India aren't an abstract commodity flow; they trace back to five identifiable cities and, in most cases, a company whose products you could probably name yourself. Machinery and mechanical appliances lead the list at roughly $3.65 billion, ahead of electrical equipment, aircraft - spacecraft parts, precision instruments, vehicles, plastics and chemicals.
Standphill India has already worked with German manufacturers - including Vestolit GmbH, a vinyl resins producer - and the recurring question we get isn't "how do I get certified," it's "does my product even need this." For a country whose export mix spans everything from industrial gearboxes to aircraft landing gear, that's not a trivial question.
Germany's Export Mix - And What Actually Needs BIS
Ranked by value (IBEF, FY26 Apr-Nov 2025, Germany's exports to India):
| Category (HS Chapter) | Approx. Value | Needs BIS? |
|---|---|---|
| Machinery - mechanical appliances (HS 84) | $3.65 billion | Yes - mostly FMCS |
| Electrical machinery - equipment (HS 85) | $1.60 billion | Yes - mostly CRS |
| Aircraft - spacecraft (HS 88) | $1.60 billion | No - DGCA, not BIS |
| Optical, precision - medical instruments (HS 90) | $1.28 billion | Partly - device-dependent |
| Vehicles - parts (HS 87) | $738.6 million | Partly - component-dependent |
| Plastics - articles (HS 39) | $469.8 million | Partly - product-dependent |
| Miscellaneous chemical products (HS 38) | $336.5 million | Partly - QCO-dependent |
Vehicle type-approval itself sits with ARAI and MoRTH, not BIS - but individual components (certain safety glass, mirrors, electrical parts) can still be BIS-relevant. Same logic applies to precision instruments: a lab balance and an MRI component are not treated the same way.
The Names Behind the Numbers
Instead of a generic "we cover Germany" line, here's who's actually making what, and where:
Mercedes-Benz - Porsche
Mercedes-Benz Group's global headquarters sits here, and Porsche's headquarters and main plant are a few kilometres away in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. Vehicle components headed for India - glass, mirrors, electrical parts - often start in this city.
Volkswagen
Volkswagen's headquarters and its Wolfsburg plant - widely cited as the largest car manufacturing plant in the world - dominate this city's output entirely.
BMW Group
BMW Group's headquarters and BMW Plant Munich, which marked its 100th year of production in 2022, anchor Bavaria's automotive output alongside a dense component-supplier network.
BASF
BASF's Verbund site here is, by the company's own description, the largest integrated chemical complex in the world - about 10 square kilometres, roughly 33,000 employees (nearly a third of BASF's global workforce), and somewhere between 125 and 200 linked production plants.
Siemens
Siemens' corporate headquarters are in Munich and Berlin, not here - but Erlangen, part of the greater Nuremberg region, is where a large share of Siemens' actual electrical-engineering and device manufacturing happens, backed by a publicly announced €1 billion regional investment.
Scheme Comparison - FMCS, CRS or Scheme-X
| Scheme | Typical Use | Factory Inspection | Timeline | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FMCS | Machinery, industrial equipment | Yes | 4-6 months | INR 4-8 lakh+ |
| CRS | Electrical - electronic equipment | No | 3-6 weeks | ~₹53,000 + testing |
| Scheme-X | Select lower-risk categories | No | Fastest, varies | Lower than FMCS |
A Ludwigshafen chemical filing, a Stuttgart auto-component filing and an Erlangen electronics filing are not on the same clock - don't let anyone quote you one blanket timeline for "German BIS certification."
The Authorized Indian Representative Requirement
FMCS applications need a mandatory India-based Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) - someone resident in India, degree-holding, and able to represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time. Standphill India serves as AIR for our German clients so you're not hunting for one separately.
The AIR's name goes on your licence documents and stays involved through inspections, renewals, and every BIS query in between.
