Quick Answer

BIS certification under IS 17633:2022 is mandatory for tables and desks in India under the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025, enforced from 13 February 2026 (MSEs: 14 August 2026). Office desks, workstations, study and computer tables, dining and conference tables, sit-stand desks and glass-top tables all need the ISI Mark with a CM/L number, backed by testing at a BIS-recognized lab and a factory inspection under Scheme-I. Standphill India manages the entire certification. Call +91-9667674225.

Key Facts - Tables & Desks (IS 17633)

  • Standard: IS 17633:2022 - tables and desks for adults, all materials including glass tops; latest edition applies.
  • Legal basis: Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025 - S.O. 801(E); enforced 13 Feb 2026; micro & small enterprises from 14 Aug 2026.
  • Covers: office desks & workstations, study/computer tables, dining & conference tables, height-adjustable sit-stand desks - domestic, commercial & institutional.
  • Scope trap: desks with integrated storage (drawer pedestals) can additionally attract IS 17634 requirements - combination products need careful mapping.
  • Route: BIS Scheme-I (ISI Mark) with factory inspection; foreign factories via FMCS with an AIR.
  • Import relief: pre-13-Feb-2026 BoL/PO consignment windows close ~12 Aug 2026 (S.O. 1125E); stock window ends 12 Feb 2027 (S.O. 774E).

Desks & Workstations Are Core to Office Fit-Out Tenders

Institutional buyers, GeM and corporate fit-out contractors now specify ISI-marked desks. Uncertified tables lose both legal saleability and B2B orders.

What is IS 17633:2022 and Who Needs It?

IS 17633:2022 is the Indian Standard for tables and desks - the flat work and dining surfaces that carry computers, files, loads and the occasional person who sits on the edge. The standard exists because a table failure is rarely graceful: legs buckle, tops sag, glass shatters. It verifies that the top, understructure and joints hold specified loads, stay stable and survive years of use.

Under the Furniture QCO, every manufacturer and importer of office desks, modular workstations, study and computer tables, dining and conference tables, sit-stand desks or glass-top tables for the Indian market needs an IS 17633 licence from 13 February 2026.

Tests Required Under IS 17633:2022

Table and desk testing at a BIS-recognized laboratory concentrates on the top, the understructure and their connection:

TestWhat It Evaluates
Design & WorkmanshipConstruction quality, edge treatment, joints and finish per the standard
Dimensional VerificationHeight, top dimensions and clearances per IS 17633
StabilityResistance to overturning, including under vertical and horizontal forces
Static Load - TopDistributed and concentrated loads on the work surface without failure or excessive deflection
Strength - UnderstructureHorizontal and vertical forces on legs, frames and connections
Durability & ImpactRepeated-load cycling and impact behaviour; safe glass performance for glass tops

Sit-stand desks: the height-adjustment mechanism is part of the product - its performance across the full height range should be documented and demonstrable. We prepare that evidence with the application.
