The aim is to ensure a chair is genuinely safe and reliable across years of office use, not just on day one.

This standard specifically covers chairs designed for office, workstation and similar professional environments. Certain seating types - such as ordinary general-purpose chairs and stools - fall under a different standard (IS 17632:2022) instead, so confirming that your product is genuinely a 'work chair' under IS 17631 is an important first check.

Under the Furniture QCO, work chairs cannot be legally manufactured for sale, imported or sold in India without BIS certification and the ISI Mark once enforcement begins. For a domestic manufacturer with a ready facility and complete documents, the licence is typically granted in around 30 days once testing is done, with roughly a 3-month total timeline. The factory inspection is a real step - a BIS officer verifies your production and quality systems - so preparing the facility matters as much as the product passing its tests.
