BIS QCO for Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products – Quality Control Order 2025
Introduction
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 vide S.O. 2021(E) dated 5th May, 2025, published in the Gazette of India
(Extraordinary), Part II – Section 3 – Sub-section (ii).
This Order supersedes the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality
Control) Order, 2024 and makes it mandatory for all covered aluminium and
aluminium alloy products to conform to the relevant Bureau of Indian Standards
(BIS) Indian Standards and bear the ISI Mark (Standard Mark) under a valid BIS
licence before being manufactured, imported, or sold in India.

SCOPE & APPLICABILITY
The Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2025 applies
to all aluminium and aluminium alloy products specified in the Table below,
manufactured in India for domestic sale or imported into India for commercial use.
This Order does NOT apply to:
- Aluminium products manufactured domestically exclusively for export
- Imports up to 200 kg per year by aluminium product manufacturers for
Research & Development purposes, subject to conditions specified in the Order

Note: The latest version of each Indian Standard including all amendments notified by BIS from time to time shall apply.
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS
All aluminium and aluminium alloy products covered under this QCO must:
- Conform to the corresponding Indian Standard as specified in the Table
- Bear the BIS Standard Mark (ISI Mark) under a valid BIS licence
- Obtain BIS certification under Scheme-I of Schedule-II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018
- Be tested at BIS-recognised and NABL-accredited laboratories
EXEMPTIONS & RELAXATIONS
1. Export Exemption:
Aluminium products manufactured in India exclusively for export are fully exempt from this QCO.
2. Research & Development (R&D) Import Provision:
Manufacturers of aluminium products may import up to 200 kg of goods
per year for R&D purposes, provided:
• Such imported goods are NOT sold commercially
• Goods are disposed of as scrap after R&D use
• Manufacturer maintains year-wise records and furnishes the same to the Central Government on company letterhead duly signed by the authorised signatory
IMPLEMENTATION DATES
- General Enterprises (excluding Micro & Small): 1st October, 2025
- Small Enterprises: 1st January, 2026
- Micro Enterprises: 1st April, 2026
ENFORCEMENT & PENALTIES
Any person who contravenes the provisions of this Order shall be punishable under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
Implementation Authority
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the designated certifying and enforcing authority for all aluminium and aluminium alloy products covered under this Quality Control Order.
BIS is responsible for:
- Granting ISI Mark licences to aluminium product manufacturers and importers
- Conducting factory audits and market surveillance
- Testing samples at BIS-recognised and NABL-accredited laboratories
- Taking enforcement action against non-compliant products

IS 7092 (Part 1 & 2):1992/1987 – Aluminium Alloy Tubes for Irrigation
Covers welded aluminium alloy tubes specifically designed for agricultural irrigation systems and water distribution networks.
IS 5485:1997 – EC Grade Aluminium Rod
Specifies requirements for Electrical Conductor (EC) grade aluminium rods produced by continuous casting and rolling, used in power transmission cables.
IS 733:1983 – Wrought Aluminium Bars, Rods & Sections
Covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy bars, rods, and structural sections used across general engineering and manufacturing applications.
IS 734:1975 – Forging Stock and Forgings
Specifies requirements for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy forging stock and forgings used in general engineering components and machinery parts.
IS 736:1986 – Aluminium Plates
Covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy plates used in general engineering, fabrication, and structural applications.
IS 737:2008 – Aluminium Sheets and Strip
Specifies requirements for wrought aluminium sheets and strips widely used in automotive, construction, packaging, and general engineering industries.
IS 739:1992 – Aluminium Wire (General Engineering)
Covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy wire used in general engineering applications including fasteners, springs, and similar components.
IS 740:1977 – Aluminium Rivet Stock
Specifies requirements for wrought aluminium and aluminium alloy rivet stock used in structural joining, aircraft, and general engineering applications.
IS 5082:1998 – Aluminium Products for Electrical Applications
Covers wrought aluminium bars, rods, tubes, sections, plates, and sheets specifically used in electrical appliances and power equipment.
IS 16011:2012 – Aluminium Foil for Pharmaceutical Packaging
Specifies requirements for aluminium and aluminium alloy foil used as primary and secondary packaging material in pharmaceutical industry (blister packs, strip packs, sachets, etc.)
IS 17682:2021 – Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP)
Covers aluminium composite panels consisting of two aluminium sheets bonded to a core material, widely used in building facades, signage, interior design, and cladding applications.
IS 1285:2002 – Extruded Round Tube and Hollow Section
Covers extruded aluminium round tubes and hollow sections used across construction, furniture, automotive, and general engineering sectors.
IS 2067:1975 – Wrought Aluminium Wire for Electrical Purposes
Specifies wrought aluminium wire specifically designed for electrical conductors and wiring applications in power systems.
IS 21:1992 – Aluminium for Manufacture of Utensils
Covers wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys used in manufacturing household and commercial cooking utensils including pots, pans, and vessels.
IS 1254:2007 – Corrugated Aluminium Sheet
Specifies requirements for corrugated aluminium sheets used as roofing and wall cladding material in industrial, agricultural, and residential construction.
IS 7902:2001 – Aluminium Alloy for Aerospace Applications
Covers aluminium alloy forging stock and forgings (Alloy 24343) specifically used in aerospace components and aircraft applications.
