Introduction

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, has issued the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2025 vide S.O. 801(E) dated 13th February, 2025, published in the Gazette of India (Extraordinary), Part II – Section 3 – Sub-section (ii).

This Quality Control Order mandates that all furniture products — including General Purpose Chairs & Stools, Work Chairs, Tables & Desks, Storage Units, Beds, and Bunk Beds — must conform to the corresponding Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Indian Standards and bear the mandatory ISI Mark (Standard Mark) before being manufactured, imported, or sold in India.

The Order has since been further strengthened through two amendments:
- Furniture (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2026 – S.O. 774(E) dated 12th February, 2026
- Furniture (Quality Control) Second Amendment Order, 2026 – S.O. 1125(E) dated 2nd March, 2026

These amendments introduced additional provisions for R&D imports, existing stock clearance, export-related components, and import consignment relaxations to ease the transition for manufacturers and importers.
