BIS QCO for Furniture Product (General Purpose Chairs and Stools)
Important update regarding mandatory BIS certification for manufacturers, importers, and sellers dealing in general-purpose chairs and stools in India. The latest amendment under the Quality Control Order introduces compliance requirements aligned with Indian Standard IS 17632:2022.
Overview
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has introduced the Furniture (Quality Control) Amendment Order, 2026, effective from 2nd March 2026. As per the order, all general-purpose chairs and stools must comply with IS 17632:2022 and bear the BIS Standard Mark.
Certification must be obtained under Scheme I of Schedule II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
The order applies to domestic manufacturers, importers, and sellers. However, specific exemptions are provided for export-oriented units, micro and small enterprises (for 18 months), eligible Udyam-registered businesses, and limited imports for R&D purposes.
Transitional provisions are also provided for pre-implementation stock and certain import consignments under defined conditions.

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is responsible for certification, enforcement, surveillance, and compliance under this Quality Control Order. All entities must obtain BIS certification prior to selling applicable products in the Indian market.
