Thailand Builds 2 Million Cars A Year – Machinery, Not Aluminum, Is What Actually Reaches India
India-Thailand trade ran $13.27 billion in a recent partial-year period, with Thailand's exports to India led by machinery ($1.26 billion) and electrical machinery ($1.12 billion) – not aluminum. Thailand genuinely is the "Detroit of Asia," producing over 2 million vehicles a year, but we could not confirm its named auto-parts suppliers specifically export to India rather than serve the regional/global OEM supply chain. Standphill India works from sourced numbers, not the assumption. Call +91-9667674225.
IBEF's most recent partial-year figures (through November 2025) put total India-Thailand trade at $13.27 billion, with India's imports from Thailand at $9.94 billion. Thailand-side mirror data (TradingEconomics, calendar 2024) shows Thailand's exports to India at $11.75 billion – a different year and reporting direction, so we're not merging the two into one number.
Here's the correction worth making upfront: Thailand is often assumed to be a major aluminum exporter, but sourced 2023-24 data ranks it only 42nd globally in aluminum trade value, with some datasets showing it as a net importer. India itself is the world's 4th-largest aluminum exporter – the assumption runs backwards. The real, sourced BIS-relevant story in Thailand's exports to India is machinery ($1.26 billion) and electrical machinery ($1.12 billion), a combined figure that dwarfs any aluminum claim we could verify.
Standphill India would rather correct that assumption than build a page around a category that doesn't hold up.
The Eastern Seaboard Auto Cluster – Real, But Not Confirmed for India
Thailand's "Detroit of Asia" reputation is genuine – over 2 million vehicles a year, the largest ASEAN producer, ahead of Belgium, Canada, the UK and Turkey. Here's the real cluster:
All of these are genuine, verifiable operations. But their own public materials describe supplying regional and global OEM plants – none confirm an India-specific export pipeline. We're not going to claim one that isn't sourced. Note also: Honda's Thai plants are actually in Ayutthaya and Prachinburi, central Thailand – not the Eastern Seaboard, a detail worth correcting since it's often mixed up.
What Actually Needs BIS – And What Doesn't
| Category | Needs BIS? |
|---|---|
| Machinery (~$1.26B to India) | Yes – largely FMCS/Scheme-X |
| Electrical machinery (~$1.12B to India) | Yes – mostly CRS |
| Plastics (~$991.5M to India) | Partly – finished products only |
| Pearls, gems & precious stones | No – not BIS territory |
| Fats & oils (palm oil etc.) | No – agricultural commodity |
| Aluminum & articles | Not a confirmed major category – verify before assuming |
Even within machinery and electrical machinery, not every product is notified – we check your specific HS code before quoting anything.
Scheme Comparison – FMCS, CRS or Scheme-X
| Scheme | Typical Use | Factory Inspection | Timeline | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FMCS | Machinery, heavy industrial equipment | Yes | 4–6 months | INR 4–8 lakh+ |
| CRS | Finished electrical & electronic products | No | 3–6 weeks | ~₹53,000 + testing |
| Scheme-X | Machinery & electrical equipment | No | Fastest, varies | Lower than FMCS |
An earlier version of this page claimed "FMCS completion within 45 days" for electrical goods – that's wrong. FMCS, with its mandatory factory inspection, realistically runs 4 to 6 months.
The Authorized Indian Representative Requirement
FMCS applications need a mandatory India-based Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) – someone resident in India, degree-holding, and able to represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time. Standphill India serves as AIR for our Thai clients so you're not hunting for one separately.
The AIR's name goes on your licence documents and stays involved through inspections, renewals, and every BIS query in between.

What a Thai Client Told Us
"Every consultant before Standphill assumed we were shipping auto parts because we're near Rayong. We actually make industrial machinery for a completely different sector - Standphill was the first one to ask instead of assume."
