BIS Certification for Tower Bolts (Door & Window)
ISI Mark Under the QCO 2024 - Ferrous & Non-Ferrous Sliding Tower Bolts
Mandatory for Ferrous & Non-Ferrous Tower Bolts
Sliding tower bolts for doors and windows - both ferrous (iron/steel) and non-ferrous (brass and similar) - are notified under the Bolts, Nuts and Fasteners (Quality Control) Order, 2024 and must carry the ISI Mark before sale or import in India. Each material type needs its own licence.
The Hardware Item Everyone Owns but Nobody Notices
Tower bolts are about as ordinary as fasteners get - the sliding bolt on the back of a bathroom door, the latch on a window shutter, the bolt securing a gate from the inside. They are produced in enormous volumes across India's hardware manufacturing belt, often by small and mid-sized units, and sold through every hardware shop in the country. That sheer volume, combined with genuinely variable manufacturing quality in the unorganised hardware sector, is exactly why this everyday item ended up on the notified fastener list.
The standard splits tower bolts by base material into a ferrous version (iron or mild steel) and a non-ferrous version (typically brass), because the two materials behave very differently in terms of strength, corrosion resistance and finish, and each needed its own dimensional and quality benchmark.
What the Standard Looks At
BIS testing for tower bolts checks dimensions and the smoothness of the sliding action, bend and load resistance of the bolt shaft, the strength and fixing of the staple and guides, and for ferrous bolts, the surface coating applied to resist rust. For non-ferrous bolts, material composition and finish quality are checked instead, since corrosion behaves differently in brass than in steel.
Sliding Action
Smooth, reliable operation of the sliding bolt.
Bend Resistance
Strength of the bolt shaft and fixing staple.
Coating / Finish
Rust-resistant coating (ferrous) or finish quality (non-ferrous).
Material
Composition verified for the relevant metal type.
Tower bolts sit alongside aldrops, flush bolts and indicating bolts as part of the door-and-window hardware group within the wider fastener order - see the full list on our BIS Certification for Bolts, Nuts & Fasteners page.
Who Needs Certification
You need a BIS licence directly from BIS through the standard domestic ISI Mark (Scheme-I) route before selling in the Indian market.
You need certification through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), via an Authorized Indian Representative in India.
Any manufacturer producing ferrous or non-ferrous tower bolts for sale in India needs a BIS licence, held in the manufacturer's name regardless of how the product is later branded or sold. The standard exemptions found across the wider fastener order apply equally here - export-only manufacturing, bolts imported as part of a finished door or window assembly, and small Udyam-registered micro units below specified limits. These are explained fully on our main fasteners page.
How to Get Certified
The path you take depends entirely on where your factory is. If you manufacture in India, the process runs through BIS's standard product certification route - sample testing, factory documentation and a factory inspection before the licence is issued. We have laid out every step on our BIS Certification for Indian Manufacturers page.
If your factory sits outside India, you will go through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme, which adds an Authorized Indian Representative and typically an overseas factory audit. The full breakdown is on our FMCS guide for foreign manufacturers.
If you manufacture both ferrous and non-ferrous tower bolts, send us your full product range up front - the two need separate licences, and we can sequence both efficiently. Send your list.
