Mandatory for Stainless Steel Tower Bolts

Stainless steel tower bolts - chosen for corrosion resistance in coastal and premium hardware - are notified under the Bolts, Nuts and Fasteners (Quality Control) Order, 2024 and need their own ISI Mark under a separate BIS licence before sale or import in India.

Standphill India - Fastener BIS Specialists, in India & Worldwide

With 20+ years of experience and 10,000+ certifications, Standphill India certifies the entire fasteners QCO range. We support domestic manufacturers seeking the ISI Mark and foreign manufacturers going through FMCS with an Authorized Indian Representative - one team for clients across India and around the world.

Why Manufacturers Move to Stainless

Walk into any home near the coast and you will quickly understand why stainless steel hardware exists - mild steel bolts in a salt-air environment rust within months, no matter how well they are painted or coated. Stainless steel tower bolts solve that problem at the material level rather than relying on a surface coating, which is why they have become the standard choice for coastal construction, premium residential projects and any application where a rusted, seized bolt would be a real maintenance headache.

Because the underlying material is fundamentally different from the iron and mild steel used in standard ferrous tower bolts, this product needed its own Indian Standard rather than being lumped in with the general tower bolt category.

What Certification Checks

BIS testing for stainless steel tower bolts verifies the bolt's dimensions and sliding mechanism, the strength and reliability of the staple and fixing components, and the chemical composition of the stainless steel itself, since the corrosion-resistance claim only holds if the manufacturer is actually using the grade of steel they say they are. Surface finish is also assessed, given that finish quality is often the deciding factor for buyers choosing stainless hardware in the first place.

Sliding Mechanism

Smooth, reliable operation of the bolt.

Corrosion Resistance

Verified through the stainless steel grade used.

SS Composition

Confirms the material genuinely is the stated stainless grade.

Finish Quality

Surface finish appropriate to premium hardware.

Coverage and Exemptions

Manufacturers producing stainless steel tower bolts for the Indian market need this licence in their own name. The order's usual exemptions apply - export-only production, bolts imported as part of a finished assembly, and small Udyam-registered micro units below specified investment and turnover limits - detailed on our main fasteners page.

Manufacture in India

You need a BIS licence directly from BIS through the standard domestic ISI Mark (Scheme-I) route before selling in the Indian market.

Manufacture Abroad

You need certification through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), via an Authorized Indian Representative in India.

The Certification Route

The path you take depends entirely on where your factory is. If you manufacture in India, the process runs through BIS's standard product certification route - sample testing, factory documentation and a factory inspection before the licence is issued. We have laid out every step on our BIS Certification for Indian Manufacturers page.

If your factory sits outside India, you will go through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme, which adds an Authorized Indian Representative and typically an overseas factory audit. The full breakdown is on our FMCS guide for foreign manufacturers.

If you produce both stainless and ferrous tower bolts from the same factory, mention both up front - we will tell you whether one or two licences are needed and plan testing accordingly. Get in touch.

Why Choose Standphill India for Fastener Certification

Fasteners are a deceptively tricky category - 19 products, overlapping standards, easy-to-miss exemptions and a demanding factory audit. We work across the entire fasteners QCO, not as a general firm dabbling, but as a team that knows this product family inside out and prepares every document to exact BIS specification so your file keeps moving - for manufacturers in India and around the world.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stainless steel behaves very differently from mild steel in terms of corrosion resistance, hardness and finish, and it is typically chosen for coastal, high-humidity or premium applications. The governing Indian Standard for stainless steel tower bolts therefore sets its own grade and finish requirements distinct from the standard ferrous tower bolt specification.
Stainless steel tower bolts are commonly manufactured from austenitic grades suited to general architectural hardware use, chosen for their balance of corrosion resistance and workability. The exact grade used by a manufacturer affects the test results expected during certification.
Builders in coastal and high-humidity regions, along with premium residential and commercial projects, often specify stainless steel hardware precisely for its corrosion resistance, and increasingly expect the ISI Mark as confirmation that the bolt genuinely meets the stated standard.
The dimensional and functional checks are broadly similar, but the material composition and corrosion-resistance testing differ because stainless steel and mild steel are assessed against different chemical and surface-finish benchmarks appropriate to each material.
