BIS Certification for Transmission Tower Bolts
ISI Mark Under the QCO 2024 - For Power Transmission & Distribution Towers
Mandatory for Transmission Tower Bolts
Transmission tower bolts - the hexagon bolts holding together the lattice steel of power towers - are notified under the Bolts, Nuts and Fasteners (Quality Control) Order, 2024 and must carry the ISI Mark before sale or import in India. Most power utilities require ISI-marked tower bolts.
Bolts That Hold Up the Grid
Every transmission tower you see along a highway or across open farmland is essentially thousands of relatively small hexagon bolts holding angle-steel members together into one rigid lattice frame. There is no welding involved in most of these structures - the entire integrity of the tower depends on every bolted joint being correctly torqued and the bolts themselves being dimensionally and mechanically sound. Multiply that by the number of towers carrying India's power grid across every kind of terrain and weather, and it becomes obvious why this specific bolt category needed its own standard and certification.
These bolts spend their working life outdoors, exposed to monsoon humidity, temperature swings and constant wind-induced vibration, which is a very different stress profile from an indoor machinery bolt. That outdoor durability requirement, alongside the structural load, shapes both the standard's specifications and the BIS testing applied to it.
What Gets Checked
Certification testing covers the bolt's dimensions and thread geometry, tensile strength and proof load, hardness, and the steel's chemical composition. Because these bolts are almost always hot-dip galvanised for corrosion resistance, coating thickness and adhesion are also part of what gets assessed, since a poorly galvanised bolt will start rusting and weakening long before the structural steel around it does.
Strength & Proof Load
Tensile strength and proof load for structural reliability.
Galvanising
Coating thickness and adhesion for outdoor corrosion resistance.
Hardness
Material hardness within the required limits.
Composition
Steel chemistry verified against the standard.

Who Needs This and Who Doesn't
You need a BIS licence directly from BIS through the standard domestic ISI Mark (Scheme-I) route before selling in the Indian market.
You need certification through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), via an Authorized Indian Representative in India.
If you manufacture tower bolts for sale to power utilities, transmission EPC contractors or the open Indian market, certification is mandatory and the licence sits with the manufacturer alone. The order's general exemptions apply here too - export-only production, bolts imported only as part of a finished sub-assembly, and small Udyam-registered micro units below specific limits - all covered in detail on our main fasteners page.
How Certification Works
The path you take depends entirely on where your factory is. If you manufacture in India, the process runs through BIS's standard product certification route - sample testing, factory documentation and a factory inspection before the licence is issued. We have laid out every step on our BIS Certification for Indian Manufacturers page.
If your factory sits outside India, you will go through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme, which adds an Authorized Indian Representative and typically an overseas factory audit. The full breakdown is on our FMCS guide for foreign manufacturers.
