This is the current active revision of the standard - governing the material composition, physical and mechanical properties, dimensional accuracy, and performance requirements that every BIS-certified pressure cooker gasket must meet before it can carry the ISI Mark.


The pressure cooker gasket is a safety-critical component. A gasket that fails - whether through dimensional inaccuracy, insufficient mechanical strength, premature compression set, inadequate steam resistance, or poor heat aging performance - can cause a pressure cooker to lose its seal during operation. The consequences of pressure cooker seal failure range from loss of cooking pressure and steam burns to catastrophic lid ejection and serious injury. IS 7466:2023 exists precisely to prevent these outcomes by ensuring that every certified gasket can reliably perform its sealing function across the full service life of the product.


Key requirements under IS 7466:2023 include:


Rubber material and compound - the rubber formulation must be suitable for repeated contact with food steam, hot water condensate, and the range of food oils and acids present in cooking. The compound must not contaminate food or impart taste or odour at service temperatures
