Famous in India Doesn't Mean Imported From Japan - Sony Is the Proof

BIS Act, 2016
Quick Answer

India-Japan trade ran around $25.17 billion in FY2024-25 (IBEF/Commerce Ministry, cross-checked against Japan's own MOFA data). The obvious names - Toyota, Honda, Panasonic, Daikin, Suzuki - already manufacture inside India through joint ventures, so they aren't the genuine import-for-BIS story. The real one is quieter: Sony (sales & software R&D only, no India plant), Keyence, Fanuc, and Murata (first India plant only announced in 2025). Standphill India checks which bucket your company is actually in. Call +91-9667674225.

IBEF's FY2024-25 figure puts total India-Japan trade at $25.17 billion, a number that lines up closely with Japan's own Ministry of Foreign Affairs data for calendar 2024 (roughly $24.4 billion in the same direction and magnitude) - so we're using IBEF's figure as the headline. A separate figure quoted on an Indian government page (~$27.47 billion for "FY2025-26") doesn't reconcile with either IBEF's partial-year or full-year numbers; we're flagging that discrepancy rather than picking whichever number sounds best.

The more useful story for BIS purposes isn't the trade total - it's which Japanese brands actually ship finished goods into India versus which ones build them here. Cumulative Japanese FDI into India has reached roughly $45 billion since 2000, and a lot of that money went into local plants for exactly the brand names Indians recognise best. That's precisely why the recognisable names are usually the wrong place to look for a genuine BIS import case.

Standphill India built this page around that exact distinction - because assuming "famous Japanese brand" equals "import from Japan" gets the certification question wrong more often than not.

Famous ≠ Imported - The Real Split

We checked this carefully: several other precision-component names (Denso, JTEKT, Nidec, Yaskawa) already have real India manufacturing too, so we've kept them out of the "genuine import" column rather than overstate the case.

What Actually Needs BIS - And What Doesn't

CategoryNeeds BIS?
Electronic components & consumer electronics (genuinely imported)Yes - mostly CRS
Precision instruments & automation equipmentYes - FMCS or Scheme-X depending on category
Industrial robots & machineryYes - strong Scheme-X candidate
Passenger vehicles assembled at an Indian JV plantNo - domestically manufactured, different regulatory question
Air conditioners assembled at an Indian JV plantNo - same logic as above

Even for the genuine importers, not every product is BIS-notified - we check your specific HS code before quoting anything.

Scheme Comparison - FMCS, CRS or Scheme-X

SchemeTypical UseFactory InspectionTimelineCost
FMCSPrecision instruments, industrial equipmentYes4-6 monthsINR 4-8 lakh+
CRSFinished electrical & electronic productsNo3-6 weeks~₹53,000 + testing
Scheme-XMachinery & electrical equipmentNoFastest, variesLower than FMCS

An earlier version of this page didn't mention Scheme-X at all - if you were quoted only FMCS or CRS, ask us whether Scheme-X fits your product instead.

The Authorized Indian Representative Requirement

FMCS applications need a mandatory India-based Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) - someone resident in India, degree-holding, and able to represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time. Standphill India serves as AIR for our Japanese clients so you're not hunting for one separately.

The AIR's name goes on your licence documents and stays involved through inspections, renewals, and every BIS query in between.

What a Japanese Client Told Us

"Every consultant we'd spoken to assumed that because we're a well-known name, we must already have an India factory somewhere. We don't - and Standphill was the first one to actually ask before quoting us a scheme."

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally no, for the vehicles Indians actually buy. Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Honda Cars India manufacture inside India through joint ventures, so most of what they sell here is domestically produced, not imported from Japan.
Because unlike Toyota, Honda, Panasonic, Daikin and Suzuki, Sony's India entity is focused on marketing, sales and a software R&D centre, not manufacturing - which makes Sony products sold in India more likely to be genuinely imported.
Potentially, if the specific product falls under a BIS-notified category. Both operate in India through sales and service branches rather than manufacturing plants, making their India-bound products a genuine import story worth checking.
Both, and it's changing. Murata's first India manufacturing plant, in Chennai, was only announced in 2025 and isn't yet the primary supply source, so historically most components sold in India were imported.
CRS typically takes 3 to 6 weeks once testing is complete. FMCS, with a mandatory factory inspection, realistically takes 4 to 6 months.
Yes, for FMCS applications. The AIR is a mandatory India-based, degree-holding point of contact who can represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time.
