South Korea doesn't quite fit the usual exporter profile we deal with. It isn't chasing India's market the way some smaller manufacturing hubs are - Samsung, LG, POSCO and Hyundai are already global giants, and India is simply one more large market they need to clear customs in. Why Korean Manufacturers Need BIS Certification
India's Quality Control Orders cover a long list of product categories that simply cannot be sold, imported, or stocked in an Indian warehouse without BIS approval first. Semiconductors and consumer electronics are covered. So are steel products, industrial machinery, plastics, and a fair share of what Korea's chaebols manufacture for export.
For a Korean company already selling into dozens of regulated markets, this shouldn't be the hard part - and honestly, it usually isn't the certification requirement itself that causes delays. Which BIS Scheme Applies to You - FMCS, CRS or Scheme-X
Since your factory sits outside India, the domestic "ISI Mark" route (Scheme-I) isn't available to you directly - that's reserved for manufacturing units located inside India. What you're actually choosing between is FMCS, CRS, or the newer Scheme-X, depending on what you make:

The Authorized Indian Representative - a Detail Korean Applicants Often Miss
Here's the thing a lot of first-time applicants don't realise: FMCS won't accept your application without an India-based Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) attached to it. The AIR is your official contact with BIS - someone resident in India, holding at least a bachelor's degree, familiar with the BIS Act, and legally able to represent only one foreign manufacturer at a time under this scheme. It can be your own India branch office, an importer you already work with, or an independent consultant.
