It is notified by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and administered by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Under CRS, a manufacturer whose product passes testing at a BIS-recognised laboratory receives a Standard Mark with a unique R-Number, which must then be marked on the product and its packaging.

The single most important thing for a Noida manufacturer to understand is that CRS is not the ISI Mark route. There is no factory inspection under CRS — registration rests entirely on a clean sample test report. This makes it faster than the ISI (Scheme-I) route, but it also means the test report and technical file must be right the first time.
