BIS Certification for Flush Bolts
ISI Mark Under the QCO 2024 - Recessed Bolts for Doors & Windows
Mandatory for Flush Bolts
Flush bolts - the recessed door bolts that sit level with the surface - are notified under the Bolts, Nuts and Fasteners (Quality Control) Order, 2024 and must carry the ISI Mark before sale or import in India.
The Bolt You Are Not Meant to Notice
A flush bolt is designed to disappear. Instead of sitting on the surface of a door like a regular tower bolt, it is recessed into the edge or face so it ends up flush with the woodwork or metal around it. You usually find them on the fixed, inactive leaf of a double door - the one that stays shut most of the time - holding it firmly top and bottom so the active leaf has something solid to latch against. That clean, concealed look is the whole point, and it is why this product is specified separately from surface-mounted bolts.
Because it is fitted into a recess, the precision of the body and the way the bolt engages its keep matter more here than on a chunky surface bolt - a flush bolt that binds, rattles or sits proud of the surface is an obvious defect, which is part of why the category was brought under quality control.
What Gets Tested
Certification testing for flush bolts looks at dimensional accuracy and the fit of the recessed body, the smoothness and reliability of the sliding action, the strength of the bolt and its engagement into the keep, and the surface finish. Since flush bolts are visible hardware in finished joinery, finish quality carries real weight alongside the functional and strength checks.
Recessed Fit
Accuracy of the recessed body and its seating.
Sliding Action
Smooth, reliable operation of the bolt.
Engagement
Strength of the bolt and its engagement into the keep.
Finish
Surface finish for visible joinery hardware.
Flush bolts are part of the door-and-window hardware group within the wider fastener order - see all 19 notified products on our BIS Certification for Bolts, Nuts & Fasteners page.
Who Needs the Licence
You need a BIS licence directly from BIS through the standard domestic ISI Mark (Scheme-I) route before selling in the Indian market.
You need certification through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), via an Authorized Indian Representative in India.
Manufacturers producing flush bolts for sale in India need this BIS licence, held in the manufacturer's name. As with the rest of the fastener order, a few narrow exemptions exist - export-only production, flush bolts imported only as part of a finished door assembly, and small Udyam-registered micro units below specified limits - all explained on our main fasteners page.
The Certification Process
The path you take depends entirely on where your factory is. If you manufacture in India, the process runs through BIS's standard product certification route - sample testing, factory documentation and a factory inspection before the licence is issued. We have laid out every step on our BIS Certification for Indian Manufacturers page.
If your factory sits outside India, you will go through the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme, which adds an Authorized Indian Representative and typically an overseas factory audit. The full breakdown is on our FMCS guide for foreign manufacturers.
If you make a full range of architectural door hardware, tell us which items are notified fasteners - flush bolts, tower bolts and aldrops each carry their own requirement, and we will map your range to the right set of licences. Send your catalogue.
