Is BIS Certification Mandatory for NiMH Batteries in India?

Yes - unambiguously mandatory. Under the Electronics and IT Goods (Requirement of Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021 (MeitY), portable sealed secondary nickel-system cells and batteries cannot be manufactured, imported, sold or distributed in India without a valid BIS CRS registration and the Standard Mark with R-number.

The CRS battery entry dates to 7 November 2014 - making it one of the oldest entries in the MeitY Order. Enforcement is mature: customs checks R-numbers at ports, e-commerce platforms verify listings, and institutional buyers request the R-number before purchase orders. The assumption many importers make - that "BIS is only for lithium" - is wrong and has stranded NiMH battery consignments at Nhava Sheva and Mundra repeatedly.

Critical myth to bust: AA/AAA NiMH rechargeable cells imported for consumer sale need their own BIS CRS registration. The registration is per factory location per chemistry. A brand sourcing NiMH cells from two Chinese factories needs two separate R-numbers. Why Is BIS Certification Mandatory for Nickel System Batteries?

Nickel batteries fail differently from lithium - less fire risk, more venting, electrolyte leakage and overheating under fault conditions.
