BEE Certification for LPG Stoves

The LPG stove is the heart of almost every Indian kitchen, and with hundreds of millions of households burning cooking gas daily, even a modest efficiency improvement saves a vast quantity of LPG nationally - and real money for families. That is why BEE moved domestic gas stoves from a voluntary category into mandatory star labelling from 1 January 2026. For stove manufacturers and importers, the star label is now the legal pass to the market, and a credible signal of quality to value-conscious buyers.

Because a gas stove burns fuel rather than drawing electricity, its star rating is based on thermal efficiency - the percentage of the energy in the burning LPG that is actually transferred as useful heat to the cooking vessel, rather than lost to the surrounding air. A burner design that delivers more heat into the pot and wastes less to the sides earns a higher thermal efficiency and a higher star, measured under the BEE Standards & Labelling programme. This makes the star label a direct indicator of how economically a stove uses gas.

As a newly mandatory category, LPG stoves that were never labelled before must now be tested, registered and labelled for the first time, and the Appliance Labelling and Compliance Regulations, 2026 bring market surveillance that extends to e-commerce listings. An LPG stove is unusual among BEE-rated products because it does not run on electricity - so instead of measuring watts, its rating is based on thermal efficiency: the share of the energy in the burning gas that actually reaches the cooking vessel as useful heat. A well-designed burner channels more of the flame's heat into the pot and loses less to the surrounding air, giving it a higher thermal efficiency percentage and therefore a higher star. For a family cooking several times a day, a more efficient stove simply makes each gas cylinder last longer.

The significant change is that this is a newly mandatory category from 1 January 2026. Domestic gas stoves were previously labelled only voluntarily, so many models have never carried a star and must now be tested and registered for the first time. The Appliance Labelling and Compliance Regulations, 2026 also let BEE verify labels through market surveillance, including on e-commerce platforms, making correct labelling an active compliance requirement rather than an optional badge.
