BEE Certification for Electric Water Heaters (Geysers)

Storage water heaters - the familiar electric geysers in millions of Indian bathrooms - are deceptively power-hungry: a typical unit can draw a full unit of electricity in roughly twenty minutes of heating. Because they sit switched on and lose heat continuously, BEE makes star labelling mandatory for stationary storage-type electric water heaters, so buyers can choose a geyser that holds its heat efficiently rather than quietly bleeding electricity all winter.

The metric at the heart of a geyser's star rating is standing loss - the energy the heater consumes to keep a full tank of water hot when it is simply connected to power and not being used, expressed in kWh per 24 hours at a 45°C temperature rise. A well-insulated geyser loses less heat and therefore consumes less standby energy, earning a higher star band. This is measured under the BEE Standards & Labelling programme, and notably the rating does not apply to instant heaters or to geysers below roughly six litres.

For the 2026 cycle, BEE has revised the geyser star table and label validity, raising the minimum standing-loss performance for each star band. Manufacturers, importers and permit holders must audit their registered range, re-test models needing fresh standing-loss data, and re-register under the new norms to keep their labels valid and their products on the market. A geyser's star rating is decided by its standing loss - the energy it wastes simply keeping a full tank hot while idle, measured in kWh per 24 hours at a 45°C temperature rise. The better insulated and heat-retentive the tank, the lower the standing loss and the higher the star rating, which is why a 5-star geyser can cost noticeably less to run over a winter than a 1-star model of the same capacity. Buyers do not have to calculate anything - the figure is captured on the BEE label - but for a manufacturer it is the single number that decides the product's competitiveness.

It is worth noting that BEE star ratings apply to stationary storage-type heaters and generally not to instant heaters or to small geysers below about six litres. For the 2026-2028 cycle, BEE has raised the standing-loss bar for each star band and revised the label validity, which means a model that comfortably earned a given star under the old table may need design or insulation changes - and certainly fresh testing and re-registration - to hold that star now.
