Quick Answer

Refrigerators carry the BEE star label, with separate rating methods for frost-free (FFR) and direct-cool (DCR) models. BEE has issued revised star-rating tables effective 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028 - all earlier labels expired on 31 December 2025, so every model must move to the new table to keep selling. Standphill India is an expert BEE certification consultant for refrigerators, handling testing, brand & model registration, label generation and renewals end-to-end. Call +91-9667674225.

Critical 2026 deadline: BEE revised the FFR and DCR star-rating tables, effective 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028. All existing refrigerator star labels expired on 31 December 2025. Manufacturers continuing existing models had to apply via the continuation option; registration of new models under the revised standards opens on the S&L portal. If your fridge models are not moved to the new table, they cannot be sold. Get your models migrated now.

BEE Certification for Refrigerators - Overview

Refrigerators run 24x7, 365 days a year, making them one of the largest contributors to a household's electricity bill - and a long-standing part of the BEE star-labelling programme. Unlike a simple wattage rating, refrigerators are scored on comparative energy consumption relative to their adjusted storage volume, and crucially the method differs between the two fridge types: frost-free (FFR) and direct-cool (DCR).

Under the BEE Standards & Labelling programme, both FFR and DCR ratings use a formula built on a constant multiplier (K, in kWh), a fixed allowance (C, in kWh) and the adjusted storage volume, compared against the model's measured energy use - but the constants differ for frost-free versus direct-cool. This is why a fridge's star cannot simply be copied from another model; each variant must be tested and computed against the correct table.

The big 2026 event is a table revision: BEE issued new FFR and DCR star-rating tables valid from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028, with all previous labels expiring on 31 December 2025. Every refrigerator model - existing or new - must be aligned to the revised table, or it cannot legally be sold. Standphill India manages the full refrigerator programme: energy-consumption testing for FFR/DCR, model migration to the 2026 table, continuation and new-model registration, and label generation - for Indian manufacturers and importers.

How the BEE Star Rating Works for Refrigerators

Refrigerator star ratings are calculated from energy consumption versus storage volume, with distinct methods per type:

  • Rating compares measured energy consumption against adjusted storage volume
  • Uses a constant multiplier K (kWh) and a fixed allowance C (kWh) in the BEE formula
  • Frost-free (FFR) and direct-cool (DCR) use different constants and tables
  • Lower comparative energy consumption for a given volume = more stars
  • New tables effective 1 Jan 2026 - 31 Dec 2028; all earlier labels expired 31 Dec 2025
  • The label shows brand, model, star, storage volume and annual energy use (kWh/year)

Continuation vs new registration: existing models can be carried forward via the BEE continuation option (with the original approval letter, an updated test report if older than three years, and a new sample label), while fresh models register under the revised standard. Standphill India files whichever route fits each of your models.

Frequently Asked Questions

Refrigerators carry the BEE star label, and from 1 January 2026 the framework brought frost-free and direct-cool refrigerators firmly under mandatory star labelling with revised rating tables. Every model sold in India must display a valid star label aligned to the current (2026-2028) table; models on expired labels cannot be sold.
BEE issued revised star-rating tables for frost-free (FFR) and direct-cool (DCR) refrigerators, effective 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028. All existing star labels expired on 31 December 2025. Manufacturers had to either apply for continuation of existing models or register new models under the revised standard. Standphill India handles both routes.
It compares the model's measured energy consumption against its adjusted storage volume, using a constant multiplier (K) and a fixed allowance (C) in the BEE formula. Frost-free and direct-cool refrigerators use different constants and tables, so each type and model must be tested and computed separately. Lower energy use for a given volume earns more stars.
FFR (Frost-Free Refrigerator) models auto-defrost and are rated under one set of constants and tables; DCR (Direct-Cool Refrigerator) models are manual-defrost and rated under a different set. The rating method is similar in structure but uses different K and C values, so a fridge must be rated against the correct table for its type.
Yes. Imported refrigerators are registered for the BEE star label in the name of the Indian importer, after FFR/DCR energy-consumption testing at an approved lab and alignment to the 2026 table. Standphill India structures importer-route registration and migrates every model to the current standard.
