BEE Certification for LED Lights

Mandatory Star Label by Luminous Efficacy | LED Lamps & Bulbs | Manufacturers & Importers

Quick Answer

Self-ballasted LED lamps need a mandatory BEE star label rated by luminous efficacy (lumens per watt). No LED bulb can be manufactured, imported or sold in India without it - and the more lumens a lamp delivers per watt, the higher its star rating. Standphill India is an expert BEE certification consultant for LED lights, handling testing, brand & model registration, label generation and renewals end-to-end. Call +91-9667674225.

Two certifications, do not confuse them: LED lamps need BIS certification under IS 16102 (safety, performance and quality) AND a BEE star label (energy efficiency by luminous efficacy). They are separate approvals from separate angles - and most LED makers need both. Standphill India handles BIS + BEE together.

BEE Certification for LED Lights - Overview

LED lamps replaced incandescent and CFL bulbs precisely because they deliver far more light per watt - so it is fitting that their BEE star rating is built entirely around luminous efficacy, measured in lumens per watt (L/W). Self-ballasted LED lamps (the common screw/bayonet retail bulbs) are in the BEE mandatory category: every such lamp sold in India must carry the star label.

The star bands are set by the BEE LED schedule under the BEE Standards & Labelling programme: lamps must meet a minimum luminous efficacy (around 79 L/W as the entry floor, with higher bands such as 90+ L/W earning more stars), tested on a batch of samples with defined pass criteria. Lumen maintenance is also checked - a quality LED should retain a high percentage of its initial output after long operation.

It is important not to confuse the two LED approvals. IS 16102 is the BIS standard covering LED lamp safety, performance and quality (a separate BIS certification), while the BEE star label rates only energy efficiency via luminous efficacy. Most LED manufacturers and importers need both. Standphill India runs the complete LED compliance package - BIS under IS 16102 plus BEE star labelling - with batch testing coordinated at approved labs, and full importer-route handling for brands sourcing LEDs from overseas.

How the BEE Star Rating Works for LED Lights

For LED lamps, the star rating is driven purely by how efficiently the lamp turns watts into light:

  • Luminous efficacy (L/W) = light output (lumens) ÷ power consumed (watts) - the core star metric
  • Lamps must meet a minimum efficacy floor (around 79 L/W) to qualify; higher bands (e.g. 90+ L/W) earn more stars
  • Testing is done on a batch of samples (typically 10) with defined average-efficacy pass criteria
  • Lumen maintenance is verified - the lamp should retain ~95% of output at 1000 hours of operation
  • Higher efficacy = fewer watts for the same brightness = lower electricity bills and more stars
  • The label shows wattage, lumens, efficacy and the star band so buyers can compare bulbs directly

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Self-ballasted LED lamps are in the BEE mandatory category. Every LED bulb manufactured, imported or sold in India must carry a valid BEE star label rated by luminous efficacy. Selling LED lamps without the star label is prohibited under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.
It is based on luminous efficacy - lumens of light output per watt of power consumed. Lamps must meet a minimum efficacy (around 79 L/W) to qualify, with higher bands such as 90+ L/W earning more stars. Testing is done on a batch of samples with defined average-efficacy pass criteria, and lumen maintenance over time is also verified.
IS 16102 is the BIS standard covering LED lamp safety, performance and quality - a separate BIS certification. The BEE star label rates only energy efficiency via luminous efficacy. They are different approvals, and most LED manufacturers need both. Standphill India handles BIS (IS 16102) and BEE star labelling together.
Yes. Imported self-ballasted LED lamps must carry the BEE star label, registered in the name of the Indian importer after luminous-efficacy testing at an approved lab. Standphill India structures importer-route BEE registration for LED importers and manages every model.
Typically a few weeks to a couple of months, driven mainly by batch lab testing and document readiness, plus brand and model registration on the BEE portal. Running BIS (IS 16102) and BEE in parallel saves time - which is exactly how Standphill India structures LED projects.
