A lot of footwear manufacturers in Jalandhar make multiple types of shoes and chappals under one roof — but most operate without BIS certification because the process feels complicated or time-consuming. Tilak Utpadan Pvt. Ltd. decided to do it properly and cover every product they sell.
Here is what each Indian Standard covers and why it matters:
1.) IS 15844 Part 2:2023 — Performance Shoes
This is the BIS standard specifically for performance footwear - shoes built for athletic use, training, running, and high-intensity sports activity. It sets stricter requirements than general sports shoes because performance footwear needs to hold up under real physical stress. The standard checks things like how well the sole is bonded to the upper, how much cushioning the midsole provides, how the outsole handles wear and friction, and whether the shoe can flex repeatedly without the sole cracking or separating. DELFI SHOES got this certification first - on March 5, 2024 - setting the foundation for the certifications that followed.
2. ) IS 5676:1995 - Canvas Footwear
IS 5676:1995 covers canvas shoes - one of the most commonly produced and widely sold footwear types in India. Even though canvas shoes look simple, BIS has clear requirements for the canvas upper quality, the rubber or moulded sole, the stitching and bonding, and the overall construction durability. A lot of small manufacturers skip this certification and sell uncertified canvas shoes - putting themselves at regulatory risk. Tilak Utpadan Pvt. Ltd. got their IS 5676 license on July 23, 2024, making their canvas footwear legally compliant for all market channels.
3. ) IS 6719:1972 - Hawai Chappals
Hawai chappals are one of the highest-volume footwear products in India - and IS 6719:1972 is the BIS standard that governs their manufacture. Despite being a basic product, the standard has specific requirements for the sole compound, strap quality, bonding strength, and durability. Having a BIS license under IS 6719 is mandatory for manufacturers supplying to government procurement channels, institutional buyers, and retail chains that check for ISI compliance. DELFI SHOES completed this certification last - on October 30, 2024 - giving Tilak Utpadan Pvt. Ltd. a fully certified product range by the end of 2024.
