Tapered roller bearings use cone-shaped (tapered) rollers running between tapered inner and outer raceways. This geometry lets them carry heavy radial and axial loads at the same time - something a simple ball bearing cannot do well. The tapered surfaces all meet at a common point on the bearing axis, giving true rolling motion and excellent load distribution.
