IS 3614:2021 is the current BIS specification for fire doors and assemblies - consolidating and replacing the earlier Parts 1 and 2 of IS 3614 into a single comprehensive standard. It defines the construction, material, hardware, and fire resistance performance requirements that fire door manufacturers must meet before their products carry the BIS ISI Mark.
A fire door is not just a heavy door — it is a precisely engineered fire-resistance assembly where every component, including the door leaf, frame, hinges, closer, latch, and intumescent seals, must work together to maintain a continuous barrier against fire and smoke for the door's rated fire resistance period.
Key requirements under IS 3614:2021 include:
Fire resistance rating — the complete door assembly must pass standardised fire tests maintaining structural integrity and insulation for the defined fire resistance period
Door leaf construction — material specifications including steel gauge, core composition, and panel construction details
Frame design and installation — the frame must maintain its position and seal the door opening for the full fire resistance period under fire test conditions
Hardware under fire conditions — all hinges, closers, latches, and locking devices must function correctly under thermal stress throughout the fire test
Intumescent and smoke seals — correctly specified and positioned seals that expand under heat to close the gap between door leaf and frame
Dimensional tolerances — clearances between door leaf and frame must conform to precise specifications to ensure the door closes and latches correctly every time
Self-closing mechanism - fire doors must be fitted with approved self-closing devices that ensure the door returns to and holds the closed position
ISI marking - fire resistance rating, IS 3614:2021 reference, and manufacturer details must be permanently and clearly marked on every certified fire door assembly
BIS certification under IS 3614:2021 is mandatory under the BIS Act, 2016. Delhi's building projects - commercial complexes, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, industrial facilities, and residential towers - all specify IS 3614:2021 certified fire doors under fire safety regulations and National Building Code provisions.
