IS 10322 (Part 5/Sec 1):2012 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for fixed general purpose LED luminaires - covering the safety, performance, and marking requirements that LED luminaires used in general lighting applications must satisfy to be lawfully manufactured and supplied in India.
This standard is the primary mandatory safety and performance specification for the largest volume category within India's LED lighting market - fixed luminaires installed in ceilings, walls, tracks, and surfaces in commercial, institutional, industrial, and residential settings. Every TDH brand luminaire registered under R-93041963 must meet the requirements of IS 10322 Part 5/Sec 1:2012 across its full rated operating life.
Key requirements under IS 10322 Part 5/Sec 1:2012 for fixed general purpose LED luminaires include:
Electrical Safety
Insulation resistance, dielectric strength, and touch current limits for the luminaire body, driver housing, terminal blocks, and any accessible conductive parts — protecting installers and building occupants from electric shock. Fixed luminaires are permanently wired into building electrical systems and must maintain electrical safety integrity across the full installed service life of the product.
Creepage and Clearance
Defined minimum creepage distances and clearances between live parts and accessible surfaces within the luminaire — preventing tracking and flashover failures that could cause electric shock or fire in installed fittings.
Thermal Management
Maximum temperature limits for accessible surfaces, lamp holders, supply terminals, and internal components during rated operation - preventing burns to installers during maintenance, preventing damage to wiring and adjacent building materials, and ensuring the LED module and driver operate within thermal limits that preserve rated lumen output and service life.
LED Driver Safety
Safety requirements for the integrated or separate LED driver - covering output voltage and current limits, isolation requirements, short circuit protection, and end-of-life behaviour - ensuring the driver does not create hazardous conditions when the LED module reaches end of life or under fault conditions.
Ingress Protection
IP rating verification for luminaires with declared ingress protection ratings - confirming the luminaire provides the declared level of protection against dust and moisture ingress relevant to its rated installation environment.
Mechanical Strength and Fixings
Structural integrity of the luminaire body, mounting hardware, canopy, and terminal cover - ensuring the luminaire can be safely installed, maintains mechanical integrity in service, and does not fall or create hazards if fixing points are stressed under normal installation and maintenance conditions.
Photobiological Safety
Assessment of optical radiation hazard from the LED light source - classifying the luminaire under IEC 62471 risk group requirements to ensure the luminaire does not pose retinal or skin hazard to users and installers under normal viewing and maintenance conditions.
Fire Resistance of Enclosure
Flammability requirements for luminaire enclosure materials - particularly relevant for recessed and surface-mounted luminaires installed in contact with ceiling and wall building materials where an internal fault could initiate a building fire.
Marking Requirements
Rated voltage, rated power, rated luminous flux, colour temperature, CRI, IP rating where declared, manufacturer identification, model designation, country of origin, and CRS R-Number must be clearly and permanently marked on the luminaire and its packaging.
