How South Korean Manufacturers Get ISI Mark & CRS Certification in India
If you manufacture in South Korea and export to India, you get certified in one of two ways. Steel, machinery, plastics, chemicals and auto components need the ISI Mark — granted to foreign manufacturers through the FMCS scheme (4–6 months, with a BIS factory inspection in Korea). Electronics and semiconductors need CRS registration (about 3–6 weeks, no factory audit). Both need an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) — you apply from India through your AIR while your company stays in Korea. Your KC mark or KS certification does not replace BIS, and foreign manufacturers get no MSME discount. Standphill India manages the whole process end to end — recently for HYG Co., Ltd (hnyng.com), whose stainless-steel-pipe FMCS licence was granted in January 2026.
South Korean manufacturers already meet some of the strictest standards in the world — CE, FCC, UL, and Korea's own KC mark and KS standards. So BIS is rarely a quality problem. The difficulty is that India runs its own certification system, with its own factory-inspection process and a mandatory India-based representative. This guide explains exactly how to get the two certifications that matter for a Korean exporter: the ISI Mark (via FMCS) and CRS registration.
Standphill India handles both, end to end. Most recently we guided HYG Co., Ltd (hnyng.com), a stainless-steel-pipe manufacturer, through a full FMCS certification — documentation, the BIS officer's visit to their Korean plant, and lab testing — with the licence granted in January 2026.
The Two Routes: ISI Mark (FMCS) & CRS
BIS issues both the ISI Mark and CRS. For a foreign manufacturer, the ISI Mark is granted through the FMCS scheme; CRS is a separate registration for electronics that gives an R-Number, not the ISI Mark. Your product decides the route.
| ISI Mark — FMCS | CRS Registration | |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Steel, machinery, plastics, chemicals, auto components | Electronics, semiconductors & IT hardware |
| Factory inspection | Yes — in Korea | No — lab testing only |
| Timeline | 4–6 months | About 3–6 weeks |
| Result | ISI Mark licence + CM/L number | Registration + R-Number |
How to Get the ISI Mark (FMCS) — Step by Step
Identify your Indian Standard (IS) & scheme
Match your product to its exact IS number. Each product and factory needs its own application.
Appoint your Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)
Mandatory. The AIR files and manages everything in India. Standphill India can be your AIR.
Prepare documents & file on the BIS portal
Quality manual, process flow, machinery and calibration records, product specs — in BIS format.
BIS inspects your Korean factory
A BIS officer travels to your plant to check the line, in-house lab and quality records, and draw sealed samples.
Sample testing at a BIS-recognised lab
Sealed samples are tested against the Indian Standard at a BIS-recognised lab in India.
Licence granted — ISI Mark + CM/L number
After a clean inspection, passing tests and signing the agreement and bond, your licence is issued.
How to Get CRS Registration (Electronics)
Electronics and semiconductors are Korea's biggest export to India, and they take the faster CRS route — no factory audit, just lab testing.
Confirm your product is a notified item
CRS covers 70+ notified electronics and IT products. We confirm your product and its Indian Standard.
Appoint your AIR
CRS also needs an Authorized Indian Representative to hold and manage the registration in India.
Test samples at a BIS-recognised lab
Your product is tested in India; testing usually takes around 30 days.
Registration granted — your R-Number
File the test report and receive your CRS registration with an R-Number (valid 2 years) for the product.
Do You Apply From Korea or From India?
You apply from India, through your Authorized Indian Representative, while your company stays in Korea. You do not need to open an office in India. The AIR files on the BIS portal, receives all official communication, and coordinates the process. For the ISI Mark (FMCS), BIS officers travel to your Korean factory — you never fly to India.
In short: you stay in Korea, Standphill India acts as your AIR and handles the India side, BIS comes to you, and your samples go to an Indian lab.
Fees, Timeline & Validity
| FMCS cost | ~INR 4–8 lakh+, including a refundable USD 10,000 performance bank guarantee, officer travel and testing |
| CRS cost | Government fees around INR 53,000 + lab testing |
| FMCS timeline | 4–6 months |
| CRS timeline | About 3–6 weeks once testing is complete |
| Validity | FMCS 1–2 years initially (renewable up to 5); CRS 2 years, renewable |
Foreign manufacturers get no MSME discount — India's MSME concessions apply only to Indian-registered enterprises, so a Korean company pays standard fees. Be cautious of any consultant who promises the discount.
