BEE Certification for Air Conditioners

Room air conditioners are one of the highest energy-consuming appliances in any Indian home or office, which is why they sit firmly in the BEE mandatory category. Every AC sold in India - window or split, fixed-speed or variable-speed inverter - must carry the BEE star label showing its energy efficiency, and the rating is decided not by a simple wattage but by the ISEER (Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio), a measure tuned to India's long, hot cooling season.

The performance and test basis comes from IS 1391 (Part 1 & Part 2):2018 - the Indian Standard for room air conditioners - while the star bands are notified by BEE under the BEE Standards & Labelling programme. ISEER is calculated over a defined temperature-bin distribution (24-43°C) and 1600 cooling hours a year, so it reflects real Indian usage rather than a single lab point. A separate quirk: every star-labelled AC must also ship with a default 24°C setting.

Because ACs are also a BIS-controlled product, most manufacturers need both a BIS certification (safety/quality) and a BEE star label (energy efficiency) - and a valid BIS licence is often required before BEE model registration. For air conditioners, the star is a direct function of the ISEER value - and the bands tighten over time:

• ISEER = annual cooling output ÷ annual energy consumed - higher ISEER means more cooling per unit of electricity
• Tested under IS 1391 (Part 2) over a 24-43°C temperature-bin profile and 1600 annual cooling hours
• More stars = higher ISEER band = lower running cost (a 5-star inverter typically pays back its premium within ~3 years of regular use)
• From 1 January 2026 the ISEER thresholds were raised - old 5-star reclassified to 4-star, old 4-star to 3-star
• Inverter (variable-speed) ACs generally achieve higher ISEER than fixed-speed models
• The label also shows brand, model, annual units (kWh) and whether the compressor is fixed or variable speed
