BEE Certification for Distribution Transformers

Distribution transformers are the workhorses of the power grid - stepping medium-voltage down to the 415/240 V supply that reaches homes and businesses. Because they run continuously and there are millions of them, even a small efficiency gain saves enormous amounts of energy nationally. That is why BEE brought distribution transformers under mandatory star labelling from 1 January 2026, rating them by their energy losses.

The technical basis is IS 1180 (Part 1) - covering outdoor oil-immersed distribution transformers up to 2500 kVA and 33 kV - read with the IS 2026 series and IS 2500 (Part 1). Under the BEE Standards & Labelling programme, the star rating reflects the transformer's no-load and load losses: lower losses mean higher efficiency and more stars. Certified, higher-star transformers cut transmission losses and operating cost for utilities and industry.

For transformer makers - a large, competitive manufacturing base in India plus importers - the 2026 mandate changes procurement overnight: utilities, EPCs and industrial buyers will specify star-labelled transformers in every tender. Distribution transformers are star-rated on how little energy they waste as heat - measured as losses:
