BIS Certification for DC Supplied/Battery-Operated Air Purifiers
In today’s urban lifestyle, air purifiers have become an essential appliance to combat indoor pollution. With increasing demand for portable and battery-operated solutions, DC supplied and battery-operated air purifiers are gaining popularity among households, offices, and even in vehicles. However, with rising adoption comes the need for strict safety, quality, and performance standards.
Recognizing this, the Government of India has brought DC supplied/battery-operated air purifiers under the ambit of mandatory BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification, as per the Safety of Household, Commercial and Similar Electrical Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025. This order will be implemented from 19th March 2026.
Why Certification is Necessary
Battery-operated and DC appliances, including air purifiers, are prone to risks such as:
1. ) Electrical safety hazards – short circuits, overheating, or fire.
2. ) Battery safety issues – risk of leakage, swelling, or explosion if not tested properly.
3. ) Performance inconsistencies – poor air filtration or reduced battery life without standard compliance.
4. ) Consumer trust & market credibility – certified products are more acceptable in domestic and export markets.
The BIS certification ensures that every product undergoes rigorous safety and quality checks before reaching the consumer.
Applicable Standard
As per the notification, DC supplied and battery-operated air purifiers must comply with:
IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020 – Household and Similar Electrical Appliances – Safety: Part 1 General Requirements.
This standard covers the general safety requirements for electrical appliances, ensuring they are safe to use and durable for consumer applications.
Implementation Timeline
1. ) General (all manufacturers): 19th March 2026
2. ) Small Enterprises: 19th June 2026
3. ) Micro Enterprises: 19th September 2026
This phased approach allows MSMEs additional time to comply with the certification requirements.
The BIS Certification Process
Manufacturers of DC supplied/battery-operated air purifiers need to follow these steps for certification:
1. ) Application Filing – Submit application to BIS under Scheme-I of Conformity Assessment.
2. ) Product Testing – Samples tested in a BIS-recognized lab as per IS 302 (Part 1): 2024.
3. ) Factory Inspection – BIS officials verify production process, quality control, and testing facilities.
4. ) Grant of Licence – Upon compliance, manufacturers are authorized to use the ISI mark on their air purifiers.
5. ) Surveillance – Regular audits and product checks to ensure continued compliance.
